Rule of thirds is where the person being interviewed is either to the left or right of the screen so that they aren't just in the centre of the screen. The background usually links into the theme of the interview so that it makes it more interesting. Rule of thirds is usually used in documentaries, and the interviewee is usually to the left or the right of the white lines above.

Evaluation:
After recording our prelim there would be many things I would change if we had the chance to do it again. Although there are many things I would keep the same, especially our group as it was successful with our own individual tasks making it easier for all shootings to be done. The story boards were misplaced so all of our ideas and plans of the recording had to be quickly re-done ensuring that we had enough time to record and edit. If our story boards hadn’t of been misplaced we may have had more relevant cutaways. I found that we didn’t have enough cutaways so with more planning we could have recorded more and had a selection to choose from, as we ended up with just having the right amount but some are very similar to others. Some of the cutaways could of been recorded better if we free handed the camera but with the trouble of it being not sturdy we didn’t want the risk of having to re-do it.
If there was more time we could have had the chance to interview two people but as there was limited space, we only managed to interview one person. As she was a student she was very nervous and found it hard to keep it flowing, but we just repeated many shots and when she was more relaxed it flowed better. The only problem with the interviewee was that when we read her the question we didn’t realise that she had to repeat the question so we had to re film some parts so that the film made more sense. As we had the equipment provided but only allowed to use in lesson time we didn’t manage to film outside of college. If we had the chance to film outside of college we could have handed out questionnaires and had small shots of being filling them out with cutaways of a selection of phone shops.
The camera batteries weren’t always fully charged meaning that we had to keep changing the battery but luckily didn’t lose any of the recordings as it was always paused when the battery died. The tripods sometimes didn’t fit onto the cameras so we had to always make sure before we took it away that they all fitted. The microphone that was supposed to be plugged into the camera and attached to the interviewer we forgot, however the sound still worked fine and we edited music over the top of most recordings.
When we first edited our film, we added cutaways and put it all in order but we saved it in the wrong place and so now it’s not accessible so we were then set behind task and had to stay out of college hours to catch up. (ISSUES WITH EDITING)
Our filming fitted in with the Codes and Conventions as we used a variety of shots including medium shot and close up in cutaway. In our interview we used a range of shots and framed them from the right of the screen and the interviewee didn’t look into the camera when we recorded. The interviewer sat on the opposite side of the interviewee and we edited out the questions that the interviewer asked. The lighting in the room was fine and it was in front of the interviewee. We used rule of thirds during the interview as the participant was sat to the left of the camera.
We could of made it run smoother with more cutaways and another interview so that we could of divded the interview and done short clips of a few questions being answered. If we could of found more relevant music it would of helped the theme of mobile phones as some songs only just managed to be used. We also had a problem with finding music due to copyright.
