Rule of thirds is where the person being interviewed is either to the left or right of the screen so that they aren't just in the centre of the screen. The background usually links into the theme of the interview so that it makes it more interesting. Rule of thirds is usually used in documentaries, and the interviewee is usually to the left or the right of the white lines above.
